A rare Berlin KPM porcelain coffee service with blue decor

Comprising coffee pot, teapot, milk jug, tea caddy, sugar box, quatrefoil dish, slop bowl, five coffee and tea cups and 15 saucers. The spouts issuing from masks, decorated with blue flowers, richly gilt rocailles and gilt fluting over blue ground. Blue sceptre mark, various early impressed marks to the unglazed undersides of the vessels, gold painter's marks. Minor restorations, minor wear to the gilding. H of coffee pot 23 cm; diameter slop bowl 15 cm.
Ca. 1765.

Whilst the Wegely manufactory were already experienced in the use of underglaze blue, KPM initially experienced difficulty producing it. The present service is an early and ambitious example of the manufactory's use of blue enamel. However, the development of its use was already so advanced by the time the service for the Breslau Stadtschloss was produced in 1767/68 that the blue used for the scale pattern border satisfied even the King's exacting standards.
