Two years prior to his death in 1784, Friedrich II presented the English Prince Frederick August (1763 - 1827) with an extensive dinner service when he visited Berlin. Friedrich August was named Duke of York and Ulster by his father George III of Great Britain upon his coming of age in 1783. He also undertook his visit to the Prussian King in the role of Prince Bishop, a title which had been conferred to him when he was a baby after the death of the Catholic Clemens August. According to the decrees of the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, the Prince-Bishopric of Osnabrück was to be ruled in turns by a Catholic and a Lutheran Bishop. As a member of the House of Brunswick-Lüneburg, the British Prince fulfilled the criteria for the office, the running of which had up to then been taken care of by his father.

Provenance

Lower Saxon private collection.
