A Berlin KPM porcelain cup with a rare view of the gardens of Prince Albrecht's palace

"Walzenform" model on claw feet, with original saucer. The display side painted with an atmospheric view of the inner courtyard of the palace in summer in a gilt etched frame. The reverse of the cup and the saucer decorated with palmettes and gilt tendrils. Blue sceptre mark, red imperial orb mark, blue I, impressed 28.
Circa 1832 - 40.

The palace was built between 1737 and 1739 and located at Wilhelmsstrasse 102. The Prussian Prince Albrecht (1809 - 1879) moved in there in 1830 and immediately arranged for it to be refurbished by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The results of Schinkel's amendments are visible in this view: The base of the avant corps is covered by an awning, and the design of the garden with its luscious hedges is also typical of Schinkel's style. The building was so severely damaged by an air raid in 1944 that it was left in ruins until 1949 before the Berlin senate decided to have it demolished.
