A magnificent Berlin KPM porcelain vase with views of royal palaces

With gilt metal mountings. "Eyförmig No.3 mit Porzellan Henkeln" model, fired in five pieces and mounted together, on original square plinth. Painted with a view of the king's palace in Berlin seen from the long bridge with the Schlüter monument on the left. The reverse with a summer view of Charlottenburg Palace with a potted agave in the foreground. A gilt etched oak wreath decorates the neck. With an inscribed dedication to a reserve on the front of the socle: "Herrn Johann Lucas Schönlein/ die Ärzte Berlin´s im März 1859." Blue sceptre mark and round mark to the base and socle. Lustre mark no. =III., and No=III written in ink on the wooden ring in the shaft, the original nut impressed 3. The socle inscribed twice 20F. H 103 cm. W of socle 30.5, D 30.5 ccm.

The internist and pathologist Johann Lucas Schönlein (1793 - 1864) was appointed to Berlin University in 1839. He became a full professor and personal physicial to King Frederick William IV in 1840. His colleagues in Berlin presented him with this vase when he retired in 1859. His work in the field of scientific diagnosis remains a cornerstone of medical practice to this day.

Carl Daniel Freydancks painting "Das königliche Schloss und die Lange Brücke in Berlin" was completed in 1842 and today hangs in Charlottenburg Palace, as does the atmospheric work "Ansicht des Königl. Schlosses in Charlottenburg, Gartenseite".
