A Berlin KPM porcelain plate with a view of the library in Berlin

Model no. 1084. The well painted with a view of the library facade in a round reserve, labelled to the reverse. Bordered by a wreath of pansies. Blue sceptre mark, brown imperial eagle mark, black I, impressed number 32, incised III. D 24.5 cm.
1823 - 32.

The so-called old library was erected in 1775 - 1780 after designs by Michael Philipp Boumann and Georg Christian Unger on what was then the square before the opera house, today Bebelplatz 1. Friedrich II provided the commission for a royal library in connection with the founding of the Forum Fredericianum, which was envisioned as a place to provide education for the people.
The architects based the design of the facade on draughts published by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach for the Wiener Hofburg, although the building in Vienna was only completed at the close of the 19th century. The building soon came to be referred to as the "kommode" (chest of drawers) due to its concave mouldings and pronounced horizontals.
