The "arts industriels" service is first mentioned in the manufactory archives in 1820. It took 15 years to complete the ambitious project under the painter Jean-Charles Develly (1783 - 1862). The 108 plates illustrate 89 trades. The motifs were based on observation, drawings, prints, and the reading of encyclopaedias. The service was presented to King Louis Philippe in 1836 by the Princes of Metternich.
