A Berlin KPM porcelain cup and saucer with a portrait of Friedrich Wilhelm III and the Luiseninsel

"Glockenform" model with rosette handle and original saucer. Finely painted with a depiction of the Prussian King, his hand raised to a salute, against a view of the favourite gardens of his deceased wife. The back of the cup and the saucer decorated with gilt arabesques. Blue sceptre mark, impressed 20, incised II.
Circa 1810 - 15.

This depiction probably follows an engraving by Christian August Günther (1759 - 1824) and shows the King in uniform with the Luiseninsel in the background. The gardens were planted on occasion of the royal couple's return to Berlin following their exile in Eastern Prussia. A memorial statue by Johann Gottfried Schadow was placed in the park, and this marble bowl on an altar-like base is recognisable on the left. Queen Louise passed away on 19th July 1810 in Hohenzieritz.

Provenance
