HEMBA ANCESTOR FIGURE
Democratic Republic of the Congo

54 cm. high

Cf. Neyt, F., "La Grande Statuaire Hemba du Zaïre", Louvain-la-Neuve, 1977, pp.78-81, no.10, for a similar figure in the Sidney and Bernice Clyman collection. The figure is attributed to the classic style of the Southern Niembo. The Clyman figure with similar coiffure and similar proportions is further attributed to the Mbulula region, near Kahusi, the area where the Kahela and Niembo groups meet. The most famous figure from the Mbulula region is the male in the collection of the MAS museum in Antwerp, widely regarded as the quintessential Hemba sculpture.
