A portrait miniature of an old man

Enamel on copper. Portrait of an old man (possibly a saint or apostle) looking up towards heaven, possibly after a canvas. With green speckled counter enamel. In a fire-gilt bronze frame and with a leather-bound case. Signed and dated to the lower right: "Brecheisen a Berlin 1753". 10.5 x 8.3 cm. Frame 11.8 x 9.5 cm.

Joseph Brecheisen was born in Vienna but worked as a miniature painter and etcher at numerous courts throughout Europe, for example in Berlin in 1743, in Copenhagen from 1759 - 64, in Vienna, and in Meissen in 1766, where he also worked for the porcelain manufactory.
