A portrait miniature of Mrs. Sarah Shepard

Gouache on ivory. Portrait of a lady in a lace shawl against a red curtain. Mounted under glass in a fire-gilt bronze frame and with a leather travel case monogrammed "EC". Signed and dated to the left edge: "Vanacker 1836". The ivory plaque slightly concave, the upper and lower sections extended, a minor vertical crack to the upper left edge. 15 x 12.5 cm. Case 20 x 16.5 cm.

Vanacker was one of the most renowned Belgian miniature painters of his era, and he also worked successfully in Paris as of 1834 before returning to Bruges, where he was appointed court miniature painter to King Leopold.
