An important Iranian mortar
Chased cast bronze with gilding, copper damascening and remnants of red pigment. Polygonal facetted vessel on round foot with corresponding rim. With a rounded moulding to the centre. Each face decorated with stylised foliage in two rows. The rim with Kufic calligraphy and four teardrop motifs in relief. Verdigris mainly to the bottom, the underside of the upper edge and inside, a repaired crack due to usage. H 18, D 24,3 cm. Weight 6.6 kg.
Attributed to Khorasan, 12th C.
