An important Iranian mortar

Cast bronze with high copper content, copper inlays, brownish red patina, gilding, traces of green corrosion. Polygonal facetted vessel on round foot with corresponding rim. With a rounded moulding to the centre. Each face decorated with stylised foliage in two rows. The rim with Kufic calligraphy and four teardrop motifs in relief. H 18, D 24,3 cm. Weight 6.6 kg.
Attributed to Khorasan, 12th C.

An identical mortar without the gilding in the Victoria & Albert Museums in London, museum number 948-1886.
