An important one-handled mortar with a rabbit hunt frieze

Cast bronze with golden brown patina. Cylindrical form with slightly flared rim and moulded border. Three fluted ribs with Gothic capitals terminating in pad feet with lion's heads surround the body. A further pad foot beneath the engraved handle. The upper section of the display side cast with two heraldic shields, one with the panther of the Steiermark and one with a bell, possibly the arms of the foundry. The broad rim cast with a classical relief showing a dog chasing rabbits. H 17, D 17.5 cm. Weight 3.8 kg. Including a corresponding pestle.
