Village Landscape with Abraham and Hagar
Oil on copper. 12.5 x 15.5 cm.
The foreground of this small work on copper depicts the Old Testament story of Abraham casting out Hagar and her son Ishmael. Abraham's wife Sara, who was behind the plan, is shown in the background with her own son Isaac. This motif was popular and widely used throughout the 17th century. A signed version of this motif by Anton Mirou dated 1612 can be seen in the Prado in Madrid (inv. no. 1592).
