Carl Wilhelm de Hamilton was court painter to Prince Bishop Alexander Sigismund of Pfalz-Neuburg in Augsburg from 1719 until his death. Before that he was in the services of the Margrave of Baden-Baden. He specialised in still lifes depicting the flora and fauna of the forest floor, a genre introduced by Otto Marseus van Schriek in the 17th century.
