SALVADOR DALÍ Y DOMENECH

Le crâne de Zurbaran. Verso: Vibrations nues dématérialisant un nu habillé [...]

Double-sided study. Black and blue ink pen, chalk and pencil drawing on ivory-coloured sketchbook paper, the right corners rounded 20 x 24.6 cm Framed under glass. Numbered "13" in pencil lower right resp. "14" verso lower left. - Outer margins very minimally browned, the upper right corner with crease und minor stains.

Dalí used this double-sided sheet of sketches to prepare for not just one, but two works from 1956. In addition to a female portrait occupying the majority of the front of the sheet, we find various sketched versions of a niche motif that would become the central element of the painting “Le crâne de Zurbaran” (Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C., see Robert Descharnes/Gilles Néret, Salvador Dalí 1904-1989: Das malerische Werk, vol. II, Cologne 1993, colour illus., p. 485).
The reverse side presents erotic studies, the sketch of a dog or, alternatively, a fantasy creature as well as a perspective view featuring hovering particles. The latter can be found in modified form in the picture “Vibrations nues dématérialisant un nu habillé de vibrations super-nues” (Art Hispania S.L., Barcelona).
