Adolf Erbslöh

Parklandschaft mit Bäumen und Häuschen
Circa 1926

Oil on canvas 39.5 x 31.5 cm Framed. Signed 'A. Erbslöh' in black lower right. - Minor craquelure in the lower right area of the depiction.

Adolf Erbslöh initially studied in Karlsruhe, where he became close friends with Georg Tappert and Alexander Kanoldt. He later continued his education in Munich. There he founded the Neue Künstlervereinigung München together with Marianne von Werefkin and Alexei Jawlensky in 1909 and contributed greatly to this organisation in the years that followed.
The powerful definition of forms and the clear structures that characterise Adolf Erbslöh's oeuvre are also evident in the little park motif presented here. The slender, elegantly rising tree trunks articulate the pictorial space, and the thick foliage of the bushes and trees is positioned between them in two-dimensional, rhomboid forms. With its half-hidden planes of white, red and blue, the little building in the middle ground establishes an interesting focal point in the midst of the variegated tones of green and brown. “The garden and park motifs are other new pictures in which the focus is on nature. […] In these landscapes, which are very infrequently provided with rather small staffage figures in the foreground, Erbslöh achieves a compact, formally simplified and chromatically forceful pictorial effect that intensifies the impression of a powerful nature. In this way, he gave expression to his close bond with nature and his “feeling for nature” and revealed what his painting was based on and what its aims were.” (Brigitte Salmen, in: Adolf Erbslöh 1881-1947: Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde, Munich 2016, p. 25).
