Joseph Marioni

Untitled
1980

Acrylic on canvas. 100 x 76 cm. Signed, dated, and inscribed 'PAINTING # 9-80 Jos MARIONI' on canvas overlap. - Minor surface dust.

In Joseph Marioni's monochrome paintings, colour plays the leading role. The painting process becomes an experimental arrangement. Canvas, paint pots and paint roller form the basis; the artist becomes the mediator who enables the paint to unfold its effect. At a certain point it is left to its own devices, it flows and thus formulates its own structure. Occasional intervention with the hands is not out of the question, but this does not remain visible as such. The materiality of the colour, its relative nature on the canvas, absorbs all the preparatory measures in the naturalness of being just so. The artist is present as someone who conceives and supervises the work. [...] Thus, a kind of squaring of the circle is realised: Dismissed from the hand, the handwriting of the artist, yet individual in its unmistakable appearance, painted and yet natural at the same time.'
