In the midst of the colour-sprayed and large-scale All-over paintings, the artist concentrates on works on paper, or as here, on aluminium, often on relatively small formats which she undertakes in a classical painting manner and responds to the actual process of painting. Tract for tract, physically comprehensible with distinguishable, rhythmically juxtaposed brushstrokes applied to the picture carrier leaving the smooth, non-absorbent aluminium panel visible at least at the edges. In doing so, the haptically shining materiality of the picture carrier is defined as the moment of painting, over which, with disciplined concentration, Grosse stretches an open network of movement and counter-movement, colour tracts and colour lines of parallel arcs independent of each other, overlapping. The colours are not sprayed but applied wih a brush in an almost transparent glaze and can still be clearly individually perceived in the depth of the space. Katharina Grosse paints a construct, a deposit of rhythmically organised stripes in the format of a panel painting. As with a glimpse through a membrane, we encounter things in their own reality: a veiled colour net of criss-crossed coloured lines which have the function of generating the illusion of deep spaciality in open transparency. As if one were to look into one of those mysterious mirrors which repeat the motif into the deeper layers, into infinity, and stage the idea of a possible rapport beyond the chosen format.
