This tureen belongs to an extensive service of which the circumstances of its commission have yet to be ascertained. It is thought to have been commissioned alongside a dinner service ordered in 1774 for the Dutch Stadtholder Wilhem V of Orange which was decorated with similar views of the provinces of the Netherlands. This service may even have been ordered by the same patron.
