A porcelain plaque with a portrait of a lady in a lace bonnet

Half-figure portrait facing left in a garden against a cloudy sky. She wears a purple satin gown and holds a red book in her hand. Signed lower left "Morgenroth f:" H 16, W 14 cm. In an ebonised wood frame H 36.5 cm.
Johann Martin Morgenroth, circa 1840.

The almost photographically accurate miniature portraits of Johann Martin Morgenroth (1800 - 1859) rarely become available on the market. Like his colleague Jakob Stelzer in Karlsruhe, he also worked in a conservative manner in the academic style. The drapery indicates an aristocratic patron.

Provenance

Private collection, Baden-Württemberg.
