Although the traditional ascription of this painting to Alvise Vivarini cannot be upheld, it is still a typical product of this Venetian artist's studio. This is evident in the carpet spread out within a panoramic landscape in the background and in the facial features and pose of the Virgin. Alvise painted several Madonnas of this type throughout the 1480s, both for larger altarpieces and in smaller versions for private devotion. These works reflect the influence of Giovanni Bellini and Antonello da Messina.
