Taddeo Zuccari

The Circumcision of Christ

Oil on copper. 51.5 x 40.5 cm.

All of Rome's most illustrious patrons had their chapels and palaces painted by Taddeo Zuccari. His first masterpiece is thought to be the fresco series with the Passion in Santa Maria della Consolazione in Rome. Zuccari also collaborated in the decoration of several rooms of the Villa Giulia, the Pope's summer residence in Rome, under the management of Giorgio Vasari and later Prospero Fontana. However, his decorations for the representative state rooms of the Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola are considered to be his most important works. He created the important series of frescoes, showing both portraits of important historical figures and the history of the Farnese family, together with his brother in around 1559. In 1565 he also completed the decoration of the Sala dei Fasti in the same palace. Zuccari died in Rome in 1566 at age 37. He was buried in the Pantheon not far from the grave of Raphael.
