Netherlandish School 16th century

The Virgin and Child with an Angel

Oil on panel (parquetted). 18 x 14.5 cm.

After this small devotional image (registered at the RKD in The Hague under the number 111891) was sold at auction in 1927 as the work of Adriaen Isenbrant, Sotheby's New York sold it once again in 1992 with an attribution to Marcellus Coffermans. The work was subsequently offered on the art market as Marcellus Coffermans in the following years. Although this attribution can probably not be supported today, the piece remains a fine quality 16th century panel painting with obvious stylistic parallels to this master's works.
