Bartolomeo Bettera

Two Still Lifes with Musical Instruments

Oil on canvas (relined). Each 72 x 140 cm.

In his expertise, Filippo Pedrocco stresses the importance of these two paintings as valuble additions to the little known oeuvre of Bartolomeo Bettera. Today he is considered one of the most gifted Baroque still life painters of Northern Italy, and in his most accomplished works he acheived the same quality as his colleague Evaristo Baschenis. Like Baschenis, Bettera also specialised in decorative arrangements of musical instruments. Pedrocco describes these pendants as an example of the artist's mature phase, comparing them to a pair of signed paintings today housed in the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo which originated from the Secco Suardo collection.
