Johann Georg Platzer

Salome with the Head of John the Baptist

Oil on copper. 29.5 x 39 cm.

Johann Georg Platzer was one of the greatest painters of the Viennese late Baroque. He was born in 1704 in Eppan in South Tyrol. He was taught to paint by his stepfather Joseph Anton Keßler and his uncle Christoph Platzer.
Although he spent the majority of his life in his home town, he also enjoyed great success as an artist in Vienna, where his style aligned perfectly with the tastes of the upper classes. The present work can be ascribed without doubt to Platzer's oeuvre of finely worked pieces, most of which are painted on copper panels using a vivid colour palette and lively brushstrokes.
Platzer achieved great wealth as a painter during his lifetime and today his works can be found in many of the greatest collections in the world, such as the Hermitage in St Petersburg, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.
