Hermann (David Salomon) Corrodi

Harbour Scene in Istanbul

Oil on canvas. 80 x 64.5 cm.
Signed lower left: H. Corrodi Roma.

Hermann Corrodi, an artist of Swiss descent born in Italy, specialised in landscape painting early on in his career. From the year 1876 onwards he began to visit, sketch and paint the Near East, Egypt, and Syria as well as the countries of the Mediterranean and the Far East. He is thus counted among the Orientalists of the 19th century who captured the daily life of these regions in their paintings. However, Corrodi spent the majority of his life in Rome, where he taught at the Accademia di San Luca and where this work was painted.
