Flemish first half 16th century

A Flemish carved wood pietà, first half 16th century

Presumably oak, carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out in the lower section. The reverse with remains of older polychromy. A figure of the seated Virgin designed for a frontal and lowered viewpoint. She is shown holding the body of Her dead Son in Her lap. The expressive quality of this devotional figure of the mourning Virgin is accentuated rather than diminished by its fragmentary condition.
Only the torso of Christ survives. The back of the head replaced. Vertical cracks. Losses due to insect damage and wear throughout. Height 86 cm.

Provenance

West German private ownership.
