Flemish 17th century

A 17th century Flemish carved boxwood crucifixion group

Carved in the round, the figures and the INRI panel worked separately. Christ is depicted with elongated proportions on a tall cross whose vertical and horizontal beams imitate the branches of a tree. Figures of the Virgin Mary and Saint John stand on either side of the tree's roots. The base of the cross is formed by a large skull entwined by the serpent from the Garden of Eden.
The left edge of the perizonium replaced. Mounted on a wooden plinth. 51.5 cm (without plinth).
