Edgar Ende is frequently classified as a Surrealist painter, and yet Surrealism's intellectual and playful approach is not applicable to his highly imaginative pictorial worlds. Ende “does not consider himself an inventor, or an artist but more an explorer who discovers strange worlds and remote horizons. He thus does not playfully manipulate the pictorial world available to him and instead takes a back seat to the images, places himself as the medium in the service of what is seen. Painting has to eschew all claims of its own, and simply record as exactly as possible what the imagination has tracked down by way of images in the darkness.” (Gottfried Knapp, in: Jörg Kriechbaum (ed.), Edgar Ende. Der Maler geistiger Welten. Eine Monographie, Stuttgart & Vienna, 1987, p. 17)
