Lyonel Feininger

Ouville-la-Rivière
1915

Charcoal drawing, finely outlined in India ink, on laid paper 23.4 x 31.3/31.7 cm Signed, dated, and titled 'Feininger Ouville-la-Rivière 15. Dec. 1915' in India ink below the depiction. - Minor browning.

Lyonel Feininger visited the village of Ouville-la-Rivière near Dieppe during a stay in Normandy in August and September 1906, shortly before moving to Paris, where he rented a studio and maintained loose contact with the illustrious circle of artists of the Café du Dôme. He returned to Paris twice in the following years. Although this charcoal drawing was not created until 1915, it seems to be based on the motifs that the artist captured during this early visit to Normandy. In extremely acute triangular shapes and strong chiaroscuro contrasts, Feininger captures the low-hanging, densely layered roofs of the houses in a very focused composition.
