Karl Schmidt-Rottluff

Herbst in Sierksdorf
1963

Watercolour and India ink on watercolour laid paper 50 x 70 cm Framed under glass. Signed 'SRottluff' (joined) in black lower right and work number '6362' in pencil. Titled 'Herbst in Sierksdorf' verso in pencil and numbered "70/24" in green by hand. - In fine condition with vibrant colours.

There is a close link between the small community of Sierksdorf - once a fishing village, later a popular seaside resort - in the bay of Lübeck and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff's late oeuvre. Between 1951 and 1973, the artist usually spent the summer months here as a guest at the house of the painter Günter Machemehl. In addition to the atmospheric views of the village, he most notably captured the nearby coastal cliff and beach scenery creating various, at times dramatic moods of light in intense colours. In this luminous watercolour, the most diverse forms and colour nuances of trees, hedges and paths merge into an ornamental network of green, blue and yellow tones, the reddish-brown silhouettes of the houses on the left setting tonal accents.
