Günter Brus

Die rote Tödin
1981

Pastel and graphite on packing paper. 121.5 x 80 cm. Framed under glass. Signed, dated, and titled 'Die rote Tödin Günter Brus 81' and inscribed 'LIEBE'. - Minor traces of age.

'[…] Brus is a painter in the sense in which van Gogh, vice versa, is illustrator. While the latter applied the oil paint to the canvas in an, as it were, graphic process, overrunning all previous laws of brush technique, Brus pressed, kneaded, stemmed, whirled, chased, wafted the colour particles of his crayons onto the paper in a quasi painterly process, disregarding the boundaries of genre and technique, theme and colour theory. Starting with the line, but also with expansive surfaces, this art is tachist in gesture, yet figurative in the result, abstract and yet full of exuberant abundance, self-created and free despite all its connections to the past.
