Jörg Immendorff

Untitled
2002

Oil on canvas. 150 x 200 cm. Signed and dated 'Immendorff 02'. - Minor traces of age.

According to Siegfried Gohr, the figure group in the left half of the picture was taken from a woodcut by Andrea Andreani after Titian's The Flood.
„Immendorff has succeeded in using formal and iconological discoveries such as those of the German Renaissance or the English eighteenth century to critically question his painting. The highly artificial inclusion of 'artistic colleagues' who worked in other centuries has raised the work to a new level. These are reciprocal commentaries. […] Immendorff has been able unlike any other to maintain a constant dialogue with European painting. The artist has brilliantly mastered the risk which goes with this procedure - a work has arisen which clearly calculates its genealogy down to the last minute branching, a work whose special capability for autobiographical analysis achieves artistic quality." (Carl Haenlein, in: Jörg Immendorff, Bilder und Zeichnungen, exhib.cat. Kestnergesellschaft, Hanover 2000, p.6)
