A bronze figure of Guanyin. Ming dynasty, 17th century

Seated in maharajalila on a rock, the left foot resting on a lotus flower, the right holding a pearl, the left hand held in mudra, wearing an ornate diadem with a central figure of Amitabha, ear hangings and a necklace with strands of beads on her chest, to her left on a rock the amrita flask and (formerly) a parrot, on the rocky pedestal a small qilin looks upward while the acolytes Longnü and Shancai with a book stand at the corners. Remains of gilded brownish-red lacquer. Damage to the pedestal and old restoration.

While representations of Guanyin seated in meditation abound, the iconography with pearl, bottle, parrot, qilin and the two acolytes is rather rare.
