A Berlin KPM dessert plate from a dinner service with mythological decor made for Friedrich II

Model no. 631 with lancet arch pierced rim. Finely painted with a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses: Procne rescuing her sister Philomena from jail. The border decorated with a wreath of flowerheads and laurel. Blue sceptre mark, 83. in black, pressnummer 13. Restoration to the rim between 1 and 2 o'clock. D 24.8 cm.

The motif that decorates this plate is based on an engraving by Charles Eisen from the second volume of the illustrated edition "Les métamorphoses d'Ovide en latin et en français". Eisen produced the drawings for the 58 full-page plates illustrating the four-volume series, which was published in 1767, 1768, 1769, and 1771. The engravings were produced by Pierre-Charles Baquoy, Louis Binet, Joseph de Longueil, Nicolas de Launay, Jean Massard, Noël Le Mire, François Denis Née, Emmanuel-Jean-Népomucène De Ghendt, Louis-Joseph Masquelier, Louis Legrand, Nicolas Ponce, Jean-François Rousseau, and Jean-Jacques Le Veau. The engraving upon which this image is based is signed "Ch. Eisen Inv." and "Baquoy Sculp."
