A Berlin KPM porcelain vase in the Moorish taste

Unidentified model fired in two pieces and screw-mounted. Narrow baluster form with flared rim and pierced handles decorated with a net-like pattern of calligraphic tendrils. Blue imperial eagle mark in a circle, red imperial orb mark, pressnummer 38. H 45 cm.
1847 - 49.

The first vase of this kind was produced 1838 for Tsar Nicholas I. The model was probably influenced by the "Persian" porcelain designs of Karl Friedrich Schinkel which were in turn inspired by the famous Lalla Rûkh celebrations held in honour of the heirs to the Russian throne in 1821. However, this vase goes one step further in the use of calligraphic decor to cover the entire surface. The design is reminiscent of the plaster decorations found in the architecture of Southern Spain and Morocco, and the piece dispenses entirely with European style painted decor.

Provenance

Private collection, Copenhagen.
