A French ribbed mortar

Slightly rough cast bronze with dark brown patina. Of tapering form with a narrow waisted base and protruding moulded rim. With eight vertical pilaster ribs alternating with medallions depicting the Virgin and Child. The display side with a coin plaque with a bell (caster's mark) and inscription in capital letters "TOINE CAVET". H 16, D 20.4 cm. Weight c. 7.8 kg. Includes a corresponding later pestle.
