A rare Frankfurt silver columbine chalice

Silver; gold-plated. Silver-gilt chalice with a round gadrooned base supporting a short baluster-form shaft with foliage and scrolls. The narrow waisted cuppa with two rows of gadrooned motifs amid acanthus in bas relief. Engraved "MAT.R.H.B.SPIN.AACH" around the rim. The domed lid with corresponding décor and a large scroll finial. Brands: BZ Frankfurt am Main, MZ Johann Jacob I Leumann (1646 - 81, Scheffler Hessen No. 135, 228). H 35 cm, 338 g.
Marks of Johann Jacob I Leumann, around 1650.

Leumann's patrons included the electoral court of Heidelberg, among their documented orders being a gilt tazza described as a “silbern Lampet, 6 M(ark) schwer” in 1657.
