A Meissen Böttger porcelain tankard with a silver mounting commemorating Otto Ludwig von Schönburg

Cylindrical tankard decorated with three chrysanthemum sprigs in high relief. The domed lid inlaid with a commemorative medallion inscribed "SIMPLICITAS CLYPEI TRABIUMQVE GRAVISSIMA MOLES INCLYTA NOBILITANT SCHOENBURGAE INSIGNIA GENTIS SIMPLICITAS PRISCI VESTIGIA DETEDIT ORTUS, AT TRABIUM MOLES GRANDI MOLIMINE CAEPTAM" (the simple shield and the weight of the heavy beam ennoble the famous coat of arms of the Schönburg family line). On the reverse a portrait of portrait of Otto Ludwig von Schönburg inscribed: "NEC VITA NEC MORS SEPARABIT ROM VIII 38 39 NATUS HARTENSTEIN XVI SEPT 1643 ET 1701 DENAT IBID XXII NOV" (neither life nor death will part. Born in Hartenstein on 16th September 1643 and died there on 22nd November 1701). The assay mark on the silver mountings presumably that of Rochlitz in Saxony, unidentified maker's mark “ISH”. Porcelain unmarked. A firing crack above the handle. H 17.2, D 10 cm.
