An enamelled plaque with Christ as the Man of Sorrows

Copper panel with polychrome enamel and gilding, tortoiseshell coloured counter enamel. Rectangular plaque with white acanthus spandrels in relief flanking a central oval reserve with a finely painted depiction of the flagellated Christ retrieving his cloak from the ground. Monogrammed “I.L.” in black below, signed on the reverse "Laudin Emaillieur a Limoges I.L.". Some hairline cracks, two holes in the upper section with minor cracks around the rims. H 16.5, W 3.9 cm, framed H 27.9, W 25.1 cm.
Limoges, Laudin workshop, Jules or Jacques II Laudin, second half 17th C.

A similar plaque with a depiction of Ignatius of Loyola, signed Nicolas Laudin was among the war losses of the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin (Netzer, Maleremails aus Limoges. Der Bestand des Berliner Kunstgewerbemuseums, Berlin 1999, no. 44).
