An important terracotta bust of a knight from the Order of the Golden Fleece

An almost life-sized bust, hollowed out on the reverse and with an oval hollow in the back of the head. He is depicted facing slightly towards the right with long hair falling to his collar, the tips of his moustache partially covering the corners of his mouth and with an untrimmed beard. Over his puff sleeved shirt he wears a collar with a narrow lace trim and a doublet engraved with flowering tendrils. He wears the sash of the Order of the Golden Fleece over his left shoulder and the lamb emblem hanging from a chain around his neck. H 49.8, W 52, D 26 cm.
Attributed to the circle of Gianlorenzo Berninis or Alessandro Algardis, around 1630 – 50.

Although this bust has been traditionally ascribed to Jacques Jonghelinck (1530 - 1606), it can certainly be dated later as it already reflects the influence of Gian Lorenzo Bernini's (1598 - 1680) realism.

Provenance

Belgian private collection.
