Caritas

Oil on canvas (relined). 116 x 135 cm.

According to Thomas Aquinas' (1225-1274) teachings on the virtues, the Summa Theologiae, the Latin word Caritas means love. From this the definition of charity developed, which in the visual arts is usually depicted as a nursing woman surrounded by children. The depiction of the infant here is reminiscent of figures by Luca Cambiaso. The facial features show parallels to Procaccini and the composition, lighting and chiaroscuro show similarities with the works of Paolo Domenico Piola (1627-1703), who headed a productive workshop. An attribution to Piola has been suggested.
