Daniel Mijtens the Elder, circle of

Portrait of a Gentleman (George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham?)

Oil on canvas (relined). 56 x 46 cm.

The present work is traditionally held to be a portrait of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, despite the fact that he was murdered when he was just 35 years old and the gentleman in this portrait appears considerably older. George Villiers was a favourite and leading minister of the English kings James I and Charles I. The Delft-born artist Daniel Mijtens I, who was court painter to James I and Charles I in London from 1618 to 1634, painted a full-length portrait of the Duke which is currently housed in the National Maritime Museum in London. The author of this portrait was most likely an artist from Mijtens' circle.
