Antonio Tibaldi, attributed to

Still Life with Armour and Carpets

Oil on canvas (relined). 50 x 65 cm.

In his busy compositions, the Roman still life painter Antonio Tibaldi pays particular attention to the accurate depiction of costly items such as opulent suits of armour, vessels of precious metals, clocks, and carpets. Many of these motifs can be found in similar arrangements in numerous other works by the artist, such as the knight's helmet with its violet plume or the bulbous vessel in the left background. The present work relates most closely to two paintings sold by Christie's (London, 14.12.1990, lot 20) and Semenzato (Milan, 23.09.1990, lot 815) (cf. Gianluca & Ulisse Bocchi: Pittori di Natura Morta a Roma. Artisti italiani 1630-1750, Viadana 2005, p. 475, illus. AT.2 and p. 481 illus. AT.9).
