We would like to thank Dr Bernhard Schnackenburg for the attribution of this drawing to the little known and seldom encountered œuvre of Ostade's pupil Jan de Groot. In comparison to earlier sheets by the artist, which are more tentative and hesitant, Dr Schnackenburg describes the present work as “slightly more advanced and self-assured”, and thus supposes a date of around 1670/75.
