A French carved ivory relief of the Virgin and Child, second half 14th century

carved ivory. The relief shows the Virgin and Child accompanied by two angels with lamps and the kneeling figure of the donor in a Gothic architectural surround. The smooth area on the reverse of the piece with a slightly raised frame was originally used to hold a layer of wax which could be incised and written on with a stylus.
With vertical hairline cracks, a small drilled hole in the upper border. Two remnants of cloth glued to the reverse. Height 11.3 x 5.4 cm.
