The Virgin and Child, probably Upper Rhine Region, circa 1470/80

Carved in the round. Minimal remains of former polychromy. A finely carved figure of the Virgin standing in a gently swaying pose holding the Christ Child in both hands before Her. He is depicted unclothed, wriggling in Her arms and holding an apple. The quality of the carving is especially evident in the long hair of the Virgin falling in cascades down Her back and in the detailed rendering of the drapery.
The arms of the Child reattached. Minimal wear with minor losses, predominantly to the Virgin's crown. Height 43 cm.
