A carved wooden figure of Saint John, presumably Swabian, around 1500

Presumably limewood, carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. Partially overpainted/reapplied polychromy and gilding.. A half-length depiction of the youthful Saint John the Evangelist holding his identifying attribute, the chalice, in his left hand. The right hand, now lost, would presumably have originally been held aloft in a blessing.
The upper part of the chalice lost. A reinforced vertical crack on the reverse. Insect damage and wear throughout. Height 39 cm.
