Flemish around 1515/1520

A Flemish carved wooden travel altar with the crucifixion, around 1515/1520

With minimal remains of former polychromy and gilding. This small, two piece travel altar and predella contains exceptionally finely carved depictions of the crucifixion of Christ in the centre flanked by six scenes from the passion to either side (Christ on the Mount of Olives, the arrest of Christ, Christ before Herod, the Flagellation, Christ crowned with thorns, Christ carrying the cross with Saint Veronica). The predella shows depictions of the Deposition, Lamentation, and Entombment alongside Saint Catherine and a bishop with a church model. The individual reliefs and figures are set into (presumably newer) hand carved and made-to-measure frames with velvet back panels.
Minimal wear. In a glazed wooden frame. 22 x 16.5 x 2 cm..
