Andreas Achenbach

Sailing Ships on the Coast

Oil on canvas. 79 x 104 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: A. Achenbach 93.

Alongside Northern and Central European landscapes, marine paintings form the second major theme in Andreas Achenbach's œuvre. The artist first tackled this genre in the mid-1830s, and was to develop it throughout his entire career. Harbours, often depicted in stormy seas, are a frequently reoccurring motif in his seascapes. Andreas Achenbach's brilliant marine depictions exerted a strong and lasting influence on almost all German sea painters throughout the entire 19th century.
The close nature of the depiction, in which the three-masted ship occupies the entirety of the canvas, lends the work an almost photographic quality, whilst the houses on the right side of the image provide a scale to illustrate the monumentality of the ship.
